The BlephEx procedure

As the eyelids can be difficult to clean, this overgrowth of bacteria, biofilm, scurf and debris can accumulate over many years, and the toxin released from bacterial inflammation can cause significant irritation to the eyelid and tear glands.

To combat this with the BlephEx treatment, a numbing drop is first placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort.

Then, the BlephEx handpiece is used to precisely spin a medical-grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids. Each micro-sponge is disposable, and a clean one is used for each eyelid, so bacteria are not spread between them.

Am I a good candidate for BlephEx?

BlephEx is worth considering if you have ongoing symptoms of blepharitis – itchy, red, or gritty eyelids, crusting around the lashes, or eyes that feel uncomfortable first thing in the morning – especially where regular lid hygiene at home hasn’t fully settled things. It’s a good option alongside, not instead of, daily lid care, since BlephEx clears years of built-up debris that a warm compress and lid wipes alone can struggle to shift.

What to expect after treatment

BlephEx is a same-day, no-downtime procedure. Your eyelids may feel slightly warm or look a little pink immediately afterwards, but this settles quickly and most patients are comfortable returning straight to normal activities. Because the treatment addresses the underlying build-up rather than just the symptoms, many people notice their eyes feel more comfortable over the following days to weeks as inflammation eases – your optometrist will advise whether repeat treatment every 6 months, alongside daily lid hygiene, is right for you.
