BlephEx Treatment
BlephEx is a new, painless procedure performed by our eye care professionals in practice to treat Blepharitis.
This new non-invasive, painless procedure reduces scurf and bacterial debris, which are the main causes of the inflammatory eyelid disease, alleviating the uncomfortable symptoms of blepharitis.

As the eyelids can be difficult to clean, this overgrowth of bacteria, biofilm, scurf and debris can accumulate over many years, and the toxin released from bacterial inflammation can cause significant irritation to the eyelid and tear glands.
To combat this with the BlephEx treatment, a numbing drop is first placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort.
Then, the BlephEx handpiece is used to precisely spin a medical-grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids. Each micro-sponge is disposable, and a clean one is used for each eyelid, so bacteria are not spread between them.
The procedure lasts around 6-8 minutes and can be repeated every 6 months.

What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a chronic (long-term) inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of the eyelashes.
Anyone can get blepharitis, but the prevalence increases with age, since as we get older, we make fewer natural antibodies in our tears.
