What is BlephEx Treatment?

BlephEx is a treatment for blepharitis, a long-term inflammatory eyelid condition often caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the eyelid and base of the eyelashes.

BlephEx helps alleviate blepharitis by removing debris and the bacteria that causes uncomfortable symptoms.

Symptoms of blepharitis include:

  • Red, inflamed eyelids
  • Crusting around the eyelashes
  • Itching and discomfort

What happens at a BlephEx appointment?

During a BlephEx procedure, your optician will first place a numbing drop into each eye for optimal comfort.

The optician uses a BlephEx hand piece to spin a sterile, medical-grade micro-sponge along your eyelid edges and lashes, removing scurf and debris while exfoliating the skin. They use a clean micro-sponge on each eyelid to prevent spreading bacteria between your eyes.

The BlephEx procedure is non-evasive, painless, and lasts around 6-8 minutes.

Is BlephEx worth it?

When untreated, blepharitis can be a debilitating condition. Patients who undergo BlephEx treatment may see a significant decrease in eye itchiness, discomfort and redness, so it’s worth trying to see if it’s right for you.

As blepharitis is an often recurring condition, it is recommended to repeat the BlephEx treatment every 6 months. Continual treatment helps to maintain optimal eye health and prevent blepharitis symptoms in the future.

How Much Does BlephEx Treatment Cost?

If receiving BlephEx treatments at Opticare Opticians, you can expect to pay £50 per treatment. Alternatively, the BlephEx treatment is included as part of our Optiplan Complete, which is £13 per month, and comes with lots of benefits. You can find out more about Optiplan Complete here.
