In our latest instalment of the “Behind the Scenes” series at Opticare, we take a closer look at the daily work of our dedicated staff. Today, we’re featuring Gavin Wynne, our skilled Audiologist, who is passionate about providing top-notch hearing care to our community in the East Midlands. Join us as we explore his day-to-day activities, responsibilities, and what drives him in his career through this engaging Q&A interview.
Q: In a sentence, what is it that you do?
I provide a comprehensive hearing service, which includes everything from wax removal to fitting hearing aids and offering aftercare.
Q: Describe a typical day at work.
My day is quite varied and hands-on. It typically includes microsuction wax removal, conducting audiometric tests to assess hearing, fitting patients with hearing aids, and providing ongoing service and maintenance for these devices. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a difference in someone’s life.
Q: What are you responsible for?
I am responsible for ensuring that our patients receive the best hearing care available in the area. This involves not only the technical aspects of hearing assessment and aid provision but also ensuring that each patient’s care is personalised and thorough.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with people from all walks of life and helping them overcome their hearing difficulties. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how improving someone’s hearing can dramatically enhance their quality of life.
Q: How did you end up in this job?
Initially, I didn’t have a clear direction in terms of career aspirations. However, everything changed when I attended an interview for a trainee hearing aid dispenser position. I instantly fell in love with the industry and its potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Q: What qualifications do you have?
I am a fully qualified Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, and I have undergone additional training in wax removal techniques, including both irrigation and microsuction.
Q: How do you prioritise your work and manage your time?
My schedule is primarily managed for me, which helps a lot. I use any available time between appointments to order hearing aids and other necessary supplies to ensure we’re always prepared for our patients’ needs.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role?
One of the significant challenges is encouraging people to acknowledge and address their hearing loss. This is particularly important as recent research suggests there may be links between hearing loss and cognitive decline. Raising awareness and helping people take action early is a crucial part of my job.
