In our latest instalment of “A Day in the Life” series, we’re excited to spotlight Amy Glover, one of our Optical Assistants, whose daily efforts ensure a welcoming and efficient experience for all our patients.
Q: In a sentence, what is it that you do?
I greet patients as they arrive at the practice and assist them in choosing and fitting their new glasses.
Q: Describe a typical day at work.
My day starts with preparing the practice for our first patient’s arrival. I welcome all patients and address any inquiries they might have. After their sight tests, I help them select their new glasses, providing advice on frame fit and the various lens options available.
Q: What are you responsible for?
I focus on making patients feel comfortable and welcome as soon as they enter our practices. My responsibilities include answering the phone, booking appointments, and accommodating patients’ schedules as best as I can. I listen attentively to their needs to help them achieve the look they want with their new glasses.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love meeting all the different patients and having conversations with them, whether it’s just asking about their day or complimenting their choice in glasses. These little interactions make each day unique and fulfilling.
Q: How did you end up in this job?
After 23 years in retail and a recent redundancy, I sought a completely different career path that was still heavily focused on people. I wanted a job that would challenge me and allow me to learn new skills, which led me to become an Optical Assistant.
Q: What qualifications do you have?
While I don’t have a background in optics, I bring 23 years of customer service experience to the table. This experience is invaluable as it revolves around listening and responding to people effectively, skills that are just as essential in my current role as they were in retail.
Q: How do you prioritise your work and manage your time?
I maintain a calm approach and tackle tasks as they come. While patients are my priority, I manage paperwork and other responsibilities in between appointments, ensuring that essential tasks are completed first.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role?
Every aspect of my job has been a learning curve—from mastering our booking system to dispensing glasses. I’m currently learning about varifocals, which is exciting. I take pride in learning something new each day; it keeps my job interesting and varied.
We hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look into Amy Glover’s day as an Optical Assistant at Opticare. Amy’s eagerness and dedication to patient care are critical to helping us provide the best possible service to our patients.
