Sustainable Frames & Where to Find Them

Eco-Friendly Glasses: Sustainable Frames & Where to Find Them

With climate issues becoming ever more prevalent in the news, more people are choosing environmentally conscious, sustainable options in their lives – including food, clothing, beauty products, and beyond.
This eco-consciousness can also be applied to your eyewear, helping you see clearly whilst doing your bit for the environment.

Why Choose Sustainable Glasses Frames

Traditional glasses frames are often made from petroleum-derived plastics or newly mined metals. That raises several environmental concerns: ongoing demand for fossil resources, plastic waste accumulating in landfills or oceans, and high carbon emissions associated with manufacturing.

Sustainable eyewear, by contrast, aims to tackle these problems. When you choose frames made from recycled, bio-based, or renewable materials, you:
• Reduce demand for new plastic or metal production.
• Help divert waste (e.g. recycled plastic bottles, discarded metal, or ocean plastic) back into useful products.
• Support more ethical, circular production cycles, often with lower overall carbon footprints and reduced toxicity.

What Are Eco-Friendly Glasses?

Eco-friendly glasses use sustainable materials like bio-acetate, recycled plastic, recycled stainless steel, aluminium, wood, or even bamboo.

Some companies, such as Eco Eyewear, take this further by making their glasses “carbon negative”. This means that their efforts to reduce carbon emissions by planting a tree for every pair of glasses sold actually surpass neutrality, and that their trees remove more CO2 than their eyewear production emits. So far, they’ve planted over 4 million trees through their One Frame, One Tree program.

Alternatives to Plastic Frames

Due to the plastic pandemic currently taking over, at Opticare, we offer alternatives to standard plastic frames, including titanium, stainless steel, and carbon fibre.

Titanium frames are ideal for sensitive skin and for those allergic to certain metals, as they are lightweight and non-corrosive.

Carbon fibre frames are lightweight, tough, and flexible, and they have a sleek, modern look. These are ideal for getting the look of metal glasses, but when you need something hypoallergenic.

You can view our full range of frames and styles in-store at one of our branches.

Where To Buy Eco-Friendly Glasses

Titanium Frames

Silhouette

Silhouette, an Austrian brand established in 1964, is a top innovator in rimless titanium eyewear. Known for its feather-light frames, Silhouette has mastered the art of creating durable yet virtually weightless glasses.
The Titan Minimal Art collection revolutionised the market with its screwless and rimless design. Silhouette’s innovative use of titanium ensures maximum comfort and durability, making it a go-to brand for those who value minimalist aesthetics.
The brand offers a wide range of styles, colours, and sizes, catering to a variety of preferences.

Flexon

Flexon eyewear is more durable, lightweight, and resistant than conventional metals. Their glasses use titanium memory metal combined with rubber, TR90, and stainless steel for extra flexibility. The use of memory metal in the bridge and/or temples allow them to be flexed, bent, or twisted and return to their original shape.

Carbon Fibre Frames

Ray-Ban

Ray-Ban carbon fibre sunglasses are engineered for technical performance without compromise. These sunglasses feature ultra-light, ultra-strong carbon fibre frames created from precision-twisted fibres and resin. Lighter than PEEK (Polyether ether ketone) and built for durability, they’re ideal for outdoor lifestyles, extreme sports, or anyone seeking advanced design and comfort. With lightweight temples, exceptional resistance, and a secure, comfortable fit, carbon fibre sunglasses deliver cutting-edge style and performance in every detail.

Oakley

Oakley have developed their own line of high-performance carbon fibre glasses that feature ultra-lightweight frames. To further enhance the performance frames, some carbon fibre glasses feature hinges with no screws, instead they move smoothly as the hinge is riveted to the temples and the hinge itself.

Bio-Acetate

Etnia Barcelona

Etnia Barcelona is a Spanish eyewear brand that has been creating vibrant and colourful eyewear, inspired by the rich culture and architecture of Barcelona, since 2001. They use eco-friendly materials such as cotton and acetate, which are renewable and biodegradable. The brand has also developed its own eco-acetate material, made from wood pulp and cotton, and is 100% biodegradable.

How We Do Our Bit At Opticare

The Contact Lens Recycling Programme at Opticare

At Opticare, we’ve partnered with ACUVUE and TerraCycle to join the Contact Lens Recycling Programme.
Across the UK, millions of contact lenses are disposed of each year. The programme’s mission is to save over ¾ of a billion contact lenses from causing environmental damage each year by preventing them from being sent to landfill or flushed down the drain.
We want to make it super easy for you, so all you need to do is collect your old contact lenses and just pop them into your nearest Opticare Opticians. All of our branches have recycling bins waiting for you.
We can recycle your old contact lenses, any make or brand. Plus, we also accept the blister packaging they came in and the foil backing.

Recycling Frames

Only some components of some glasses are recyclable, so glasses must first be dismantled to separate these components.
If the lenses of your glasses are made of plastic, which is the case for the majority, then they are perfectly recyclable. If the frames are made from plastic, steel, or aluminium, the entire pair of glasses is fully recyclable.

Eco-friendly eyewear shows that sustainability and style can go hand in hand. By choosing frames made from recycled plastic, recycled metal, bio-acetate, wood or bamboo, and by supporting opticians who prioritise environmental responsibility, you can reduce your personal impact on the planet without sacrificing quality or aesthetics.
At Opticare Opticians, we’re ready to help you find the right sustainable glasses: stylish, responsible, and built to last. If you’re curious about sustainable frames or want to explore eco-conscious eyewear options, just get in touch. We’d be happy to guide you.
