How Much Is an Eye Test in the UK

How Much Is an Eye Test in the UK? Costs, NHS Options & What’s Included

If you’re thinking about getting an eye test, whether at an independent optician or a larger chain, it helps to know what typical costs are, whether you qualify for a free test under NHS, and what exactly is covered in a standard examination. At Opticare Opticians, we believe in full transparency, so here’s a clear breakdown of UK eye-test costs, NHS eligibility and what you should expect from your eye check.

Who Qualifies for a Free NHS Eye Test

Under NHS rules, you’re eligible for a free sight test if you satisfy at least one of the following:

• Under 16
• Aged 16-18 in full-time education
• Aged 60 or over
• Registered blind or partially sighted
• Have diabetes or glaucoma
• Qualify for certain benefits or tax-credit exemptions

If you qualify, you’re entitled to a free NHS-funded test every two years. If your eye health requires more frequent checks (for example, due to a condition), the optometrist may advise an earlier appointment.

If you don’t meet NHS criteria (or prefer extras beyond the standard NHS test), you can opt for a private eye test, paid out-of-pocket.

Typical Costs of a Private Eye Test

If you choose a private eye test, as many people do for added flexibility, convenience, or advanced screening, prices across the UK vary depending on the optician and what’s included.

At Opticare, we offer a Standard Eye Exam or an Enhanced Eye Exam. Our Standard Eye Exam is available free on the NHS or for £50. Our Enhanced Eye Exam is £50 if you’re covered by the NHS or £75 if you’re not. However, if you’re part of our Opti-Plan, your Enhanced Eye Exams are free.

See below for the full breakdown of what’s included in our Standard Eye Exam and our Enhanced Eye Exam.

Why Many People Choose Private Over NHS or Vice Versa

Good Reasons to Use The NHS-Funded Eye Test

• Free for eligible people, significant cost saving
• Cover the basics needed to maintain good vision and detect common conditions.

Why You Might Choose a Private Eye Test

• Flexibility, some people don’t fall under NHS eligibility or prefer more frequent test.
• Advanced screening, private tests often offer extra scans that can spot issue early.
• Optical choices, sometimes easier to combine with purchasing glasses or contact lenses, or to get additional services.
• Independent optician service, many people value the more personalised, boutique, or attentive service that independent opticians provide compared to high-street chains.

In the UK, the cost of an eye test depends on your eligibility, personal needs, and the optician you choose. For many people, a free NHS-funded sight test is sufficient and ideal. For others, especially those wanting advanced care, extra screenings, or more frequent monitoring, a private test may offer value and reassurance.

At Opticare Opticians we believe in honest pricing, thorough care, and putting your eye health first. Whether you qualify under the NHS or prefer private care, you can expect a professional, patient-focused experience aimed at keeping your vision sharp for years to come.
