With Back-To-School season just around the corner, keeping your child’s vision healthy is super important.
Help your child hit the ground running this new school year with these top tips:
Keep Their Eyes Protected
Encourage your child to build healthy habits by persuading them to wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses to protect their eyes against excessive UV rays.
Provide a Well-Balanced Diet
Feeding your child a healthy, well-balanced diet rich in nutrients such as zinc, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E has been found to be beneficial to eye health. We suggest:
- Oranges, strawberries, mangos, and any other fruits rich in vitamins C and E, to help restore tissues and prevent infections.
- Fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids, to prevent dry eyes and reduce future risk of cataracts and AMD.
- Spinach, Kale, and other leafy greens that contain Vitamin A, that can help fight dry eyes and night blindness.
- Eggs, nuts, and other non-meat proteins to balance your child’s diet.
Control Screen Time
Excessive screen time and blue light is harmful to your child’s eyes. Using screens for too long, or holding them too close can lead to headaches, blurry vision, dry eyes, and eye strain. Suggest regular screen time breaks to your child to help them protect their eyes.
Watch out for Warning Signs
Worried your child might be suffering from vision problems? Look out for these tell-tale signs:
- Squinting
- Eye rubbing
- Bringing objects up close to their eyes
- Head tilting
- A change in school performance
- Poor reading ability
- Sensitivity to light
- Poor hand-eye coordination
