A-Level Subjects Required for Studying a BSc in Optometry
Most universities that offer undergraduate degrees in optometry are looking for a combination of at least 2 of these subjects:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Maths
- Physics
Grade requirements will vary from university to university but the typical offer levels for A-Levels are AAB or for Scottish Highers are AABBB.

Post University
After you complete a BSc in Optometry, you must spend a year in assessed clinical training to develop your practical skills. This program is called the Pre-Registration Scheme.
Alternatively, many universities are now offering four-year integrated Master’s which include clinical learning in practice as part of the degree.
After completing both degree and placement assessments, you then register with the General Optical Council as a qualified optometrist.
Dispensing Opticians (DO)
As an alternative to becoming an optometrist, you might want to consider a career as a dispensing optician.
This role is a combination of technical knowledge and good customer service skills.
To become a dispensing optician, you need to complete at least 3 years’ worth of academic and practical training to obtain fellowship of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO). All dispensing opticians must also register with the General Optical Council.
