We’ve all developed bad glasses habits, whether it’s cleaning them with your shirt, putting your glasses in your pockets without a case, or using your breath to buff the lenses.
You spend a lot of time and money finding and choosing the right pair of glasses that work for your lifestyle and suit your style, so why don’t you take better care of such an essential item?
In this guide, we’ll cover the correct way to take care of your glasses, keeping them clean, safe, and prolonging their lifespan.
1. Remove Your Glasses with Both Hands
When taking off or putting on your glasses, always use both hands. Using just one hand and pulling them off in one direction can cause the screws to loosen over time, stretch the frames, and cause your glasses to sit crooked on your face.
2. Store Them Away Properly
Use a hard case to store your glasses when not wearing them. Placing glasses face down on certain surfaces can cause the lenses to become scratched, reducing their effectiveness.
3. Don’t Wear Them on Top of Your Head
This is a quick way to cause the arms of your glasses to stretch so they no longer fit your face correctly. Either place them face up on a surface or return them to their protective case.
4. Don’t Let Others Wear Them
Most of us have jokingly tried on our friends’ glasses and then exclaimed some variation of “wow you’re blind!”, but this is another quick way of causing your glasses to stretch and then become loose on your head.
5. Clean Them Properly
When cleaning your glasses, always use a microfibre cloth or the cloth that came with your glasses in its original case. Using tissues, a paper towel, or your clothing to clean your lenses is never a good idea, as these contain tiny fibres that can scratch the lenses.
We recommend a cleaning spray for glasses. This is designed with glasses in mind, so it is non-abrasive and can be sprayed on both sides of the lenses and dried with a microfibre cloth.
Don’t
• Don’t use your clothing to clean them. The tiny fibres can scratch the lenses
• Don’t use saliva to clean your lenses. It’s not hygienic and doesn’t actually work that well.
• Don’t use household glass cleaners. These products have ingredients that may damage the lenses and break down the coatings.
• Don’t use paper towels or tissues; the wood pulp used to make them can scratch your lenses.
• Don’t use hot water to clean them. The hot water can damage some lens coatings.
Keep a microfibre cloth in your bag or car for cleaning on the go.
6. Get Them Adjusted Properly
If you find that your glasses are digging into your face or are uncomfortable in any way, return to your optician to have them adjusted. If the arms of your glasses feel loose, you can also tighten the screws to improve the fit. Don’t suffer with poorly fitting glasses!
7. Protect Them from Heat and Chemicals
Extreme heat can warp frames and damage lens coatings. Avoid leaving your glasses in a hot car, near radiators or in direct sunlight for long periods.
Household cleaning products, hairspray and perfume can also harm your lenses, so try to keep your glasses away from these chemicals.
By following these simple steps, you can extend the life of your glasses and enjoy crystal-clear vision every day. If your glasses need adjusting or you have any other questions related to glasses, our friendly team at Opticare is always here to help.
