With the days being longer and the clouds in remission (supposedly), it’s officially sunglasses season. But, there are more factors to consider than just style when choosing the best sunglasses to wear. Here we are going to debunk some common myths about sunglasses and point out the most important things to remember when buying a new pair.
Myth 1: Sunglasses are only needed on bright, sunny days.
Whilst this is the most common circumstance for digging out your sunglasses, UV light still gets through clouds. Regardless of weather and season, excessive UV light can lead to cataracts, growths on the eyes, and cancer. In winter, the sun reflecting off the bright white of the snow and ice can lead to photokeratitis, also known as snow blindness.
Myth 2: All lens types are the same
Different lenses offer different benefits depending on the circumstances. For sports, polycarbonate lenses work best as they’re lightweight and impact-resistant. Consider these for mountain biking or hiking.
Myth 3: Polarised lenses offer extra UV protection
Polarised lenses have their own benefits, but additional UV protection is not one of them. What polarised lenses can do is reduce glare from shiny surfaces, cars, and water.

Myth 4: Tinted lenses and darker lenses offer more protection.
Like polarised lenses, tinted lenses have benefits, but not additional protection. Tinted lenses can reduce eye strain and glare, enhance depth awareness, and improve contrast, making them a popular choice for sports players who need to keep their eyes on the ball.
Myth 5: Cheap sunglasses aren’t as good as expensive sunglasses.
As long as the sunglasses are marked as 100% UV blocking, the price doesn’t really matter. Ensure the sunglasses block both UVA and UVB rays.
Myth 6: Children don’t need sunglasses.
Everyone needs to protect their eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Get your kids to form healthy habits from a young age to allow themselves lifelong benefits.
Myth 7: Size and shape don’t matter
Just because your eyes are covered doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe. Bigger lenses are better for your eyes, including wraparound sunglasses, as they can block excess UV light from entering your eyes at the sides.
